The New Boeing 777

I did a little research on airplane seat sizes today. It seems, the average seat size is 17.2 inches with a 31 to 32 inch seat pitch. (The pitch determines how much leg room a person has.) Yikes that's small.

The new Boeing 777 has been built with an additional 5 inches to the planes width. The additional 5 inches allows the seats to go from 17.2 inches to 18.5 inches. Hey that 1.3 inches doesn't sound like a lot but it makes a big difference!

The only downside is that it is the actual airline and not the maker of the airplane that determine how wide they want their seats to be. Of course, their main concern is money.

Having said that, here are the airlines with the widest seats:

  • Midwest Express - 21 inches wide (woo hoo!)

  • United - they have recently increased seat size on some of their 727's and 777's.

Anyway, that's what I've found out so far. Stay tuned.

Airplane Seat Size

The average airplane seat is 17.2 inches across. That's not even one and a half feet wide. That's about this wide [................................................] Okay, it might be a bit more than that but not much. I suppose if you sat two Paris Hilton's side by side they might take about half that space, but I have a feeling one of my butt cheeks would make two Hiltons. Don't get me wrong, I'm not down on myself, but humor over a terrifying situation always helps one get through the day.

Smile...it might just burn a few calories.
